MOUNT EDEN BOROUGH
THE TERMITES ACT GAZETTE NOTICE CRITICISED Objection to the borough's being gazetted as an infested area under the Termites Act was expressed by several members at a meeting of the Mount Eden Borough Council last night. It was stated that only a single instance of wood having been attacked by a pest possibly of that type had been found, and it was strongly suspected that the insect responsible was not the Australian termite, but the New Zealand ant. No other cases had come to the knowledge of the building inspector and no further trouble was reported from the one case. Mr. S. E. Chappell was appointed to represent the council at future conferences and instructed to go into the matter of having the borough's name removed from the list of local bodies named in the Gazette. Building permits to the value of £15,705 were issued in the borough in September and October, according to a report. Included were nine dwellings, valued at £12,000. In the same period last year the value of permits issued was £4153. The council decided to ask the Minister of Internal Affairs, the Hon. W. E. Parry, to be present at the opening of the Plunket rooms erected as a centennial memorial. The opening ceremony will be. held on December 7.
