INCIDENT AT PIE CART LABOURER SENT TO GAOL The theft of a 10s note from the till of a city pio cart on Tuesday night was alleged in a charge brought against Henry Frederick Reid, labourer, aged •39, in the Police Court yesterday, before Mr. W." R. McKean, S.M. Accused denied the charge, but pleaded guilty to another of drunkenness in Wellesley Street. • Evidence was given that the pie stall proprietor, Ernest Howarth, placed a 10s note in the till at about 10.40. and his attention to its disappearance was drawn by a soldier in Uniform. Another man followed accused as he left the stall and entered a tobacconist's shop, later handing him over to a constable. When searched, accused had two £1 notes and 7s lOd in change, in his possession. From the dock accused said he visited the pie stall, but did not take any money. He had plenty of money of his own. he added. Remarking that accused had many previous convictions, but none for dishonesty, the magistrate sentenced him to a month's imprisonment for theft, and imposed a fine of £1 for drunkenness.
