HIGH TEMPERATURES 106 DEGREES IN MELBOURNE FEAR OF GRASS FIRES • (Received January 3, 11.50 p.m.) MELBOURNE, Jan. 3 The hottest day of tho summer so far was experienced to-day, when the city temperature reached 106 degrees. After a comparatively cool night a hot north wind arose early this morning and by 9 a.m. the temperature was 90 degrees. High temperatures prevailed all over Victoria. By 6 p.m. a cool change occurred, the tempernturo dropping about 20 degrees in 10 minutes. More hot weather is forecast and serious grass fires arc expected later if tho exceptionally hot conditions continue. The heat to-day buckled several chains of the Mornington railway line so seriously that a special race train was held up, and the passengers had to continue the journey by car. Yesterday, when the temperaturo was 01113 7 101.4 degrees, Melbourne used 145,012,000 gallons of water.
