CHAMPIONSHIP TENNIS
DEFEAT OF J. T. MAYSON Tho decisive defeat of J. T. Mayson, of Auckland, defending his men's singles title, was the main surprise in tho Canterbury Lawn Tonuis Association's championships at Wilding Park. Mayson went down ,to R. G. Pattinson in two straight sots. Pattinson walked away with- tho first set without conceding his opponent a game. He was placing his shots within inches of tho lines, lobbing deep to counter Mayson's sallies to tho nets,, and ho was also assisted by the fact that tho Aucklander's margin of error was much greater than usual. Tho game was more even, in the second sot, but Pattinson always hold tho odd game and ho won on his opponent's 'service from 5 —4. . , An outstanding performance was registered by A. D. Brown in eliminating A. R. Cant with the loss of only ono game. Brown gave ono of the finest exhibitions of singles play seen at the tournament.
