CONSCRIPTION OPPOSED

WAGE INCREASES SOUGHT LABOURERS' FEDERATION [by telegraph—press association] WELLINGTON, Tuesday Opposition to conscription was expressed by a deputation representing the New Zealand Labourers' Federation, which waited on the Ministers concerned yesterday. The deputation also sought periodical increases in wages to enable workers to keep up with the increased cost of living. Replying regarding conscription, the Minister of Defence, the Hon. F. Jones, said that at the moment the spontaneous response to the appeal for voluntary enlistment precluded any contemplation of the introduction of conscription.

On the question of the cost of living, the Minister of Finance, the Hon. W. Nash, submitted figures to show that while the cost of living had increased wages had increased simultaneously, and he claimed there was a margin in favour of wages.
