AWAPUNI DOINGS

CANDIDATES FOR LEVIN THE BIGOT PERFORMS WELL USEFUL EFFORTS REGISTERED [from our OWN correspondent] PALMERSTON NORTH, Tuesday Awapuni stables are well represented at the Levin meeting and most of the horses were set useful tasks this morning. when the weather was fine, but cold. The plough, which was slow, and the course proper, where the flags were well out, were in use for fast work.

On the plough, Clariou Call (B. n. Morris), for whom there are no immediate plans, worked once round, coming home the last three furlongs in 44 1 / = s. He was followed by Tho Bigot (Morris), who galloped a mile and a-quarter, finishing resolutely to cover the last six furlongs in 1.22. Tho Bigot may run well at Levin.

Ecstatic (G. Pratt), with an advantage in the weights, was only a head away from Laughing Lass (Morris) at the end of five furlongs in 1.5. They are engaged at Feilding. Colonel Bogey ("W. J. Broughton) was given useful pace work. His next outing will be at Feilding, where ho will appear in open company.

Du Mauricr ("Williamson) and Cuisinier kept together over seven furlongs and they came home well to run the last three in 14s. Hanover, who was entered for the Waikato meeting, is not making the trip. Koyal Sign (Morris) and Malik Kafur (Broughton) covered seven furlongs, running tho last two easily in 295. Royal Sign is eugaged at Levin on Saturday. Girl Pat (Waddell) and Silvanus (Harris) ran the last five of seven - furlongs in 1.11, time upon which they could have improved. Brazil and Earl Colossus were associated over six furlongs without being against the .watch. Renascor (Tattersall) worked well over seven furlongs.

La Coquetto (Tattersall) and Israel (Ternperton) were on terms at the end of Eve furlongs in 1.8. Old Bill (Tattersall) was given an easy half-mile, tho last three furlongs taking 4-Is. Old Bill is engaged among tho sprinters at Feilding. Moradabad (Bowden) sprinted fivo furlongs in l:S 3-5. She is a well-built filly, but she is taking plenty of time. On the course proper, Chary (Waddell) finished' strongly to complete the last three of four furlongs in 39%5. There is not nuich of this youngster but he cau gallop. He has been nominated for Feilding. Goldburn (Morris) was not asked to do her best over three furlongs in 39Vis. Aoranit (Broughton) strode over the same ground in. <ll '2-53. Guiding Light (Tattersall) maintained an even pace over seven furlongs, taking 1.23 2-5 for the last six. She has been working well and it will bo interesting to seo how she shapes at Levin.

Flammarion (J. Chaplin), who appeared to finish as sound as a bell, sprinted five furlongs in 1.5, which was a really good effort. Ho is engaged at Levin. Deflation and a Lord Quex colt sprinted five furlongs in 1.10 2-5. Caution worked well over seven furlongs in 1.38 3-5.

YOUNG PACERS CLASSIC ASPIRANTS GOOD FORM AT MATINEE FINE LOT OF TWO-YEAR-OLDS BY ABAYDOS Features of tho very successful matinee meeting at Epsom recently wero tho dual success of Narbada, tho good display of tho three-year-old filly Bonniedene, and the large number of well-bred two-year-olds paraded. The juveniles, who will later race in the Great Northern Trotting Stakes at Epsom, attracted considerable attention, aud, although only two of the dozen under silk displayed their speed, somo of tho others gave the impression of being capable of going well. Tho two who paired for a half-mile sprint were Earl's Pride, a nico filly by Robert Earl, a son. of Wrack, from Ivy War, and a gelding by Jewel Pointer from tho well-performed Trustworthy. They, treated spectators to a good exhibition, vylth an exciting finish, in which tho .Trustworthy representative, who ran on in true fashion, narrowly prevailed. Village Farm Quartette Four from Villago Farm wero scrutinised, and tho filly by Rcy do Oro—Pearl Parrish was ticked off by some good judges for futuro reference. Another to como in for favourable comment was Hippomenes, a colt by Jack Potts from Tho Abbess, who produced good winners in Jean. Darling, Tho Abbey and Carmel. A full-sister to Sandusky and a filly by Kcwpie's Crest, from Lizzio Bond, a daughter of Bonnie Bingen, shaped nicely. C. H. Goodall, who trains the Trustworthy youngster, produced two others, a gelding by Jewel Pointer from Ada Vale, dam of Aerial Bell, and a half-sister, by Tsana. to Josette. The lattor has not much sizo at present, but is a neat pacor. Tho Luvan colt and Modem Light gelding did everything asked, and a Black Pearl filly and Parrish Boy, halfbrother to Great Surprise and Young Rodney, also moved freely. Two absentees, whose breeding indicates fino possibilities, wero a gelding by Jack Potts —Kewpio's Guy and a colt by U. Scott —Escapade. Tho former is under tho caro of J. T. Paul, who won tho two-year-old classic with Contender in 11>3S and tlio Great Northorn Trotting Derby last term. Kewpio's Guy was a fino pacer and a great, stayer. Escapade's youngster is in M. Stewart's stable, and big things aro expected from him. Tho dam was a high-class trotter and has produced several good winners, while U. Scott, an aristocratically-bred horse, is already represented in tho winners' list. Three by Great Parrish

Of tho fivo tlireo-year-olds, Bonuiedeno and Charles Ilex showed to most advantage, although ltockfcl displayed fino speed iu parts and gavo tho impression that with more experience she will raco prominently. Tho three aro products of Great Parrish, Bonuiedeno being from Bcmnio Bingcn, dam of Bonnv Azuro and Sandusky, Charles Rex from Great Eyro, dam of Great Admiral, Goldon Eagle, Axminstcr and Eyre, and Rockfel from Reromai, an Adams Memorial and Cambridgo Cup winner, who produced Rero Rox and Bonnicdeno were evenly matched as two-year-olds, and they gave evidence that they are going on the right way by their displays at tho matinee. I liey promise to be the Auckland hopes for tho ureat Northern Derby. . _ A nico tvpo ot filly is Barbara Scott, by U. Scott —Frills, but, liko the other three-year-old, Auto Lad, by Auto Machine Nollota, she lacked experience and was shy. Both aro wood pacers suscepliblo to a lot of improvement.

CHAMPION FILLY ANN VONIAN GOES 2.21 Recently in America Ann Vonian, by Grattan-at-Law from Margaret Vonian, 2.5, was sent'to boat tho world's record or 2.4% for two-year-old pacing fillies, and did the milo in "2.2%. Fa vonian,22.3 A1 3 A (trotting), tho sire of the filly's dam, is bred oil somewhat similar lines to Roy Redmond, siro of many winners in Australia, nnd of Dick Redmond and Redmond's Pride, who have won in New Zealand. Favion (siro or J. E. Vonian, l s!)'/) was by ,1. Malcolm Forbes, sire of Roy Redmond's dam. Mary Elkin, tho dam of 'his siro, is by Prodigal, and tho latter also appears in the pedigree of Favonian. Axworthy, siro of Roy Redmond's siro, is tho grandsire of Favion's dam. GREAT ADMIRAL AGAIN PERTH RECORD ESTABLISHED Tho Auckland-bred trotter Great Admiral is showing fine form in Perth, and last week won t lie Bunbury Trotting Handicap, Tit furlongs, at Gloucester Park. lie registered a 2. \4% mile rate, establishing a fresh West Australian record at the distance. It was Great Admiral's third success- since going to Perth, where ho has created a fine impression. When Great Admiral won his first' race for .T. T. Paul he ran 3.29 oil" a 3.40, mark, and was one of tho best novice trotters produced in tho province.
