FIFTY YEARS AGO
POPULATION PROBLEMS The exodus of population from New Zealand 50 years ago was .causing. concern in the colony. The following editorial comment appeared in-the New Zealand Heuald of November 15, 1839:
" The figures for October show that, for the first time for a good many months, more people came into the colony than left it. The departures were 1231, while the arrivals amounted to 1336. A gain of 105 people is perhaps not much to boast of," 4 but ivo must not despise the day of small things, and we hail it as a good beginning. " Of all the discouraging symptoms that have been noticeable within the past two years and a-half the worst has undoubtedly been the exodus of the population. No argument could meet that. No sophistry could explain it away. It was an irrefutable proof that New Zealand was retrograding. Everyone who left the colony made it loss desirable for those who remained, for the taxation became heavier and trade and commerce less brisk.' In like manner, if- the stream commences to flow back again, the good effects will soon be apparent."
