CLUB RECORDS BROKEN DISCUS AND JAVELIN FEATS POPULAR LYNNDALE MEETING Three club records were broken during last week's athletic competitions. At Lymulalc on Saturday, M. S.'Hookwa.y, the Auckland discus throwing champion, throw tho discus 119 ft. 6in., which is three feet further than his best throw, and at the same meeting the junior javelin thrower, McLiskey, reached new figures with 137 ft. 9in. At tlio Old Grammarians' meeting last Wednesday. W. Coxhead. in his first throw of the season, broke the club's javelin, throw record with 158 ft. 9in. There was a fnrllier good attendance of athletes at tho Lynndale club's meoting on Saturday afternoon, where no event was won without strenuous competition. Both tho 'IOO yards and 220 yards, handicaps were won by C. Buchan from long handicaps, and tho same athlete showed that his ability had been a littlo under-rated by winning the broad jump with a leap of over 120 ft. H. Emus, the scratch runner, continues to improve. In spite of tho long handicaps lie has to concede, ho is nearly always placed. He won his heat of the 100 yards in 10 l-ss, and was socond in tho final in 10s. N. Clarke gave another very creditable performance. There was a good field in tho 220 yards handicap, which was closely fought all the way. B. Eowolls, a now and consistently good runner, wis second and Emus third., Tho half-mile aroused considerable interest, as 11. Cathcart, undefeated in middle-distance races 60 far this season, again started off scratch. 110 went much too fast in tho first lap, which ho covered in stis, and faded right away at tho finish. The raco was won by T. Collins from A. Browne, both of whom were back-markers. Collins used good judgment and strode out l'reely, although the initial fast pace set by Cathcart slowed the whole field down tho straight. A. Browno secured a well-deserved win in tho two miles, in which somo of the province's best distance runners competed. Browne has just finished a very successful winter season, and is one of tho few athletes who havo regained good form aftor long absence from tho sport. Ho is still very fit, and drew away in tho last lap from T. Collins, who had been at his elbow throughout tho race. Collins ran a fine raco and finished second, these two runners thus reversing their placings in tho half-mile. R. Crompton, ono of Auckland's most successful distance runners, started from scratch, but used the race merely as a training run, as his lap times averaged about 80 Seconds.
Tho junior ovents again drew good fields. A most promising sprinter is L. McKoy, who was third on Saturday in the 220 yards race from scratch in good time. The raco was won by McLiskey, who established the Junior javelin record later in the day. Last week's winner of. the junior mile, 11. McGeehan. won the half-mile in a closo finish with 11. Xewby, who made tho pace most of tho way.
POINTS CONTESTS A. McINNES OUTSTANDING The Otahuhu club held tho second of its series of points meetings last Thursday night, conditions for racing being excellent. The best performance of tho evening was again given by A. Mclnnes, the club's outstanding middle-distanco runner, who won tho mile and also tho 100 yards. Starting in tho milo off tho virtual scratch mark of 20 yards with W. Goosman, Auckland 440 yards and BSO yards champiob, Mclnnes went after his field from tho gun. With two Japs to go he had run right through to the front, and he won decisively in 4m 325, equalling about 4m 3os for the full distance. Ho won his club's half-mile raco last week, and appaars a greatly-improved runner this year. Another good performance was given by A. Welborn, one of the club's leading juniors, who is perhaps a little unwise to race so much with seniors. He finished second to Mclnnes, and also was second in the halfmile to J. " Smith, who won off a 25 yards handicap. Goosman did not take tho race seriously, and retired after three laps. C. W. Bell, who. if ho regains his old form, is undoubtedly one of the best 880 yards runners in Auckland, was second in the 100 yards off five yards, and third off 20 yards in tho quarter-mile, which was won by the Lynndale harrier J. Howells. Each of tho two New Zealand lady champions, Miss D. Mulling, who holds the discus throw title, and Miss M. Mcars, who holds tho shot putt, was successful in her eveni. whilo Miss M. Orindrod was second in both events. Tho latter also won the ladies 50 yards handicap and was second in the 120 yards. Tho Auckland club held a well-attended meeting under good conditions at the Domain on Wednesday. The promising sprinter, D. Armstrong, who is being advised by the former >iew Zealand representative sprinter, A. J. Elliot, bad a good win in tho 100 yards handicap from a back mark, and also was third in tho 220 yards handicap. The time, however, was slow in both ovents. The club possesses in A. O'Neil, who is a newcomer to the sport, one of tho most promising middle distanco or distance runners in Auckland. Ho is quite untrained, but already has shown that ho possesses unusual stamina. Ho finished second in tho milo from a hark mark on Wednesday, but had not warmed up in any way, and judged the pace very erratically, running- tho first two laps too slowly. Tho Papatoetoo club has commenced its Tuesday evening points meetings on tho Stadium track. Thero wero some good performances last Tuesday by R. Laurie, a very determined and versatile runner, who won every senior event on the programme except the mile. I. Smith, tho Otahuhu junior, won both jiis races, the 00 yards and 880 yards, from rather good handicaps, but shows promise of developing into a good performer.
