GAME OF BOWLS

OPEN SINGLES EVENT CLUBS GAIN NEW PLAYERS SECOND PENNANT ROUND BY SKIP With the weather generally good since Labour Day and all the clubs opened, the 1039-40 bowling season is now in full swing. The season's competitions have been commenced by most of the clubs. Players have only a short time in which to get into form in preparation for the Centre's open singles event. This will cammence on December 5, the closing date for entries being next Wednesday.

The Carlton Club is fortunate in securing as a member that versatilo bowUnr ,T. Mnrtin, formerly of the Ellcrslie Club. Martin's record is a very fine one ami lie will lack nothing in the way of opposition in his new club. This will serve to keep him in good form and his next appearance,, probably in the open singles event, will ba watched with interest. The Onehunga Club has gained two good players in J. R. Lundon and J. H. Mingins. The former has represented. Devonport for many years, while Mingins was formerly a member of the Epsom and West End clubs. A notable addition to the ranks of the Auckland Club is .T. Barber, of Balmoral, lie was runner-ui) to tho New Zealand champion singles player. W. Franks, for the Balmoral championship last season, and in view of his ability at the four-bowl game, lie will find much to interest him in his new club, where a feature of the club's activities is the large number of singles competitions. Club members will all be looking forward to tho second round of matches in the pennant. competition on Saturday. One of tho leaders in section A, Grey Lynn, will play three clubs. Mount Eden (G), Pukekohe ('G) and Te Papapa (1). This is strong opposition for Grey Lynn, if tho first round results are any criterion. Te Papa pa has the same percentage of wins as Grey Lynn, while Mount Eden is third along with Auckland Transport, and Pukekohe is fourth. Auckland Transport's four teams also have a difficult task against Mount Eden. Besides meeting Grey Lynn and Auckland Transport, Mount Eden will engage Ellerslie in a six-rink contest Ponsonby, which has a percentage oT .><> and holds a foremost position at present, has a good chance of increasing its figures. The opposition is confined to two clubs, Waitemata (10) and Hallyburton-Johnstone ((>). Carlton, which had only a fair result in the opening round, will play four clubs, Devonport (10), Edendale (S), Mancrere (0) and Waimauku (-2). A better percentage should come Carlton's way in the next, round. The Hallyburton-Johnstone Club was earlier reported as having only one win in its six games, but a check up on the cards revealed that two wins were secured. The 1 (10 per c-nt leader in section B, Glen Edetf will be all out to maintain its record. The Mount Albert Club will supply four teams against Glen Eden on Saturday. New Lynn, second in the section, with 75 per cent, has a hard proposition to face in Balmoral. West End. third with 70 per cent, will meet Balmoral in a ten-rink contest. Auckland and Onehunsra are equal with 00 per cent, in fourth place. The former has Rernuera and Manurewa to face, while Onehunga's opponents are Takapuna (10). T1 illsborn (d) and Howick (2). Waiuku, next on the list with 02 per cent, will engage Otahuhu in a straight-out contest of eight rinks a-side. This should be. a very interesting meeting. Henderson, which did* not get a single win in the first round, has a chance to retrieve the position in this round. The club meets Remuera (4) and Otahuhu (2).

TOURNEY AT MANGERE A full-rink tourney will bo played at tbo Ma nee re Bowline Club's srreen to-morrow, coniineneiiie at !) a.m. The followine skips liave entered teams:—lrvine (Ponsonbyj, Booker (Howick), Stehr (Epsom), Brooke, Cate (Burkland's Bearhl. dp Lannay 'Carlton).
