FIJI'S FOREIGN TRADE
CONTROL OF IMPORTS LIPSTICK AND TINNED GOODS [FROM OUR OWN COR RESPOND F.N T ] SUVA, Nov. S Acting, it is assumed, on instructions received from England, tho Crown Colony of Fiji has assumed control of imports from certain foreign countries. In a notico in tho Fiji Royal Gazette on November 3 it was stated that until further notico a licence would bo required to import goods from tho following countries: —United States of America, Canada, Newfoundland, Franco, Switzerland, Belgium, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Holland, Argentine, Hongkong, Java, Japan and tho Sudan. It is stated in tho regulations that applications for licences will bo granted or rejected. If granted, application has then to bo made through a bank for tho foreigu exchange required. It is understood that the question as to whether the goods required are luxuries or necessities determines tho fate of the application, luxury lines, such as lipstick, being definitely excluded. Protection of tho London cxcliango rate is believed to be tho reason for the regulations, which will affect the supply of many tinned luxury lines at present imported into Fiji from America and Canada..
