This is a condition attached to tho presentation to tho school of a shield on which the name of the best pupil in each year will bo engraved. Tho shiold was presented to tho school to-day on behalf of Mr. Frank Hirjstich, a returned soldier who was formerly a farmer in tho district, but who has recently spent much time in hospital. ' Tho conditions attached to tho shield specify that the winner each year is to write an essay criticising the education system then in vogue, pointing out what appeals most, and why, and also what finds disfavour, and why. The child is also to stato whether the teacher's methods and manner are conducive to tho acquiring of knowledge. Further, tho essayist is to make suggestions for tho betterment of his or her education both in and out of school. In a letter Mr. Hirstich explained that the object was to assist all concerned to get tho best out of the educational system*
