CHEAPER PRODUCE
NEW SEASON'S CROPS GOOD SUPPLY OF POTATOES STRAWBERRIES STILL DEAR With the now season's fruit and vegetable supplies becoming heavier on the wholesale market, there was an casing in the prices of certain commodities at the City auction sales yesterday. Rates charged by retailers for a number of lines in tlio next few weeks are expected to be lower than has been tlio case in tho past month or two. Ono cause for gratification will be tho lower prices for new potatoes this week, wholesale rates, compared with last week, being from id to Id per lb. lower. Supplies are now much heavier and the wholesale price yesterday ranged from 2-Jd to 3Jd, while others brought from 4s to 9s a bag. Although strawberry prices are still such that only those able to afford luxuries will be in a position to purchase this fruit, quantities are slowly increasing and as tho supply becomes heavier rates can bo expected to ease. Best quality Captain Cook strawberries remain at over 2s a chip, but Marguerites are priced at from Is o£d to Is lid a chip. Tomatoes are increasing in quantity very rapidly and tho wholesale prices aro down to Is to Is 2d per lb. for hothouse, while others are priced at 6d to lid per lb. Very heavy quantities of cabbages and cauliflowers came forward and slightly lower prices ruled. Cauliflowers wore 5s to 7s a sack or 2s to 4s a dozen on benches. Cabbages wore procurable at 2s to 4b 6d a sack or Is to 2s a dozen on benches. Asparagus was in heavy supply, while green peas and beans were plentiful, with slightly easier rates ruling.
