"GENTLEMANLY THING"
TORPEDOING OF FREIGHTER TRAVELLER'S DESCRIPTION "It Avas one of those gentlemanly things," said a passenger on the Mariposa , Mr. W. S. Thomas, when describing yesterday the torpedoing of the British freighter Winkleigli by a German submarine in the Atlantic. Mr. Thomas, an Australian sheep-breeder, and Mrs. Thomas were returning from a holiday visit to Europe and were on the Dutch ship Statendam, which rescued the crew of the Winkleigh. "The captain of the submarine," he said,, "gave the British ship's crewtime to get into their boats and then put a torpedo into the freighter. He gave them a couple of loaves and wished them luck. We heard the freighter's 5.0.5., sent out after the submarine had been sighted, at 7.30 a.m. and picked up the life-boats at 2.30 p.m. All the crew were saved."
