AMBULANCE APPEAL BETTER THAN LAST YEAR PUBLIC'S GENEROUS RESPONSE ORGANISATION OF COLLECTION A generous response to the street appeal of the St. John Ambulance Association in Auckland was made by the public yesterday, the amount received up to last night being £2llß 355. 'lbis sum will bo augmented by collections at Takapuna, Manurewa, St. Heliers, Mount Eden, New Lynn and Albany, these returns not yet having been received. A tribute to the generosity of the public, and to the smooth organisation responsible for the collection, was paid last night by Mr. S. E. Langstone, secretary-manager of the. association. Through the widened scope of operations many more people had made contact with the association, he said, and, with thousands of students taking an active part in the work, there had been a remarkable growth of interest. The large sum of £sl 10s 8d resulted from a collection taken up by Auckland waterside workers. When ■all subscriptions and donations had been received, Mr. Langstone said, it was hoped • that the total would be £SOO greater than last year, which was approximH"'v £2OOO.
