MODERN BATHS
NEWMARKET SCHEME A SECOND GRANDSTAND SWIMMING FOR CHILDREN It is now proposed to construct a further concrete grandstand on the Davis Crescent side of the Newmarket municipal swimming pool which will accommodate about 2000 spectators, as well as providing an adequate breakwind for bathers. This will make the baths unrivalled in New Zealand for the accommodation of large crowds. The concrete stand on tho Parnell Road boundary is now being faced with cement, and the work of preparing the dressing rooms and other amenities below this building is well in hand. ' Tlie 50 metres swimming pool is being tiled, and foundations are in hand for a diving tower. This will have four and ten metres diving platforms that conform to the Olympic standard. For most of its length, the pool is comparatively shallow, but opposite the, diving platform the floor shelves steeply to a depth of 14ft. Gin. Another, departure from the usual is an observation tunnel along tho side of tho bath. Through a plate glass window coaches standing in this tunnel will have an nnder-the-water view of swimmers and divers, which should enablo them to detect faults. This provision is believed to be contained in only one other bath in the world, this being in Tokio. There will be bclow-the-surface lighting, and by this provision it is stated it would bo possible to photograph swimmers from the observation tunnel below tho level of the water. f Another decision that is to be carried into effect as soon as the Olympic pool is tiled is the provision of a children's pool at the north end. It will be in tho form of a semi-circle.
