PATRIOTIC PURPOSES

GIFTS FOR SOLDIERS DETERRENT TO EFFORTS [from our own correspondent] TE KUITT, Thursday The patriotic purposes regulations are causing much confusion among women in Te Kuiti desirous of carrying out war work. Two meetings have taken place, one of which, held before their publication, resulted in the setting up of a War Emergency Committee representative of women and organisations of the town and district. At a later meeting addressed by the Mayor, Mr. H. T. Morton, on the application of the regulations, the idea of forwarding the money to the Reserve Bank for pooling was not considered conducive to the great efforts that were required. It was pointed out that it"was the competitive spirit that prompted the efforts made during tho last war. The restrictions regarding the authorisation of collectors and the heavy penalties provided for infringe-

ments of all regulations, were also felt to be a deterrent. . Nothing concrete, therefore, emanated from this meeting.

At a later meeting of the War Emergency Committee, however, it was decided to take advantage of one of the exemptions from the regulations and hold efforts to provide soldiers from this district with Christmas gifts and Christinas cakes.
