NO GUNS CARRIED
ATHENIA ALLEGATION STATEMENT BY OFFICER ONLY SMALL CARGO ON BOARD (Received October* 19, 6.5 p.m.) ' ' NEW YORK, Oct. 18 An officer of the Donaldson Atlantic Line denied to-day that the Athenia carried arms and munitions. "The Athenia had only a small cargo of 880 tons on board," he said. "The cargo consisted of firebricks, whisky, softgoods, steel, machinery and a small quantity of merchandise. is apparent that with only 880 tons of cargo no arms or munitions could possibly have been carried." A travel bureau operator, Mr. Gnstav Anderson, a passenger on the Athenia, Vas reported in a message from Washington published yesterday, to have.filed an affidavit with the State Department of the United States, asserting that the Athenia was carrying coast defence guns to Canada, and was to have been fitted out as a raider for the return trip. His assertions were reported to/have been based on remarks alleged to have been made by the chief officer, Mr. Copeland.
