NAVAL DESERTER'S OFFENCE GAOL FOR SIX MONTHS A deserter from the Navy, Frank Ernest Vincent Harris, aged 34 (Mr. McCarthy), came before Mr. Justice Fair in the Supreme Court yesterday for sentence for the theft of a motorcar. Mr. -McCarthy said Harris had an excellent record in the Navy for eight years and rose to the rank of chief petty officer. Apparently shore life appealed to him and lie deserted at thte beginning of tho year. He stole a ear and went to Wellington, where ho obtained steady employment. Recently he gave himself up. The car had been returned in good condition. His Honor: He kept it for some nine months and used it all the time. .Mr. McCarthy said prisoner was still subject to tho King's regulations, and would be dealt with by the Navy apart from -what the Court did. His Honor said it was impossible to grant probation for a deliberate offence of that kind. He would be sentenced to six months' imprisonment.
