TOLL OF THE ROAD
A total of 2-103 people suffered injury or death through 1769 motor accidents in Now Zealand during the five months ended August 31, and of these 113 were killed 923 seriously injured, and L 367 suffered minor injuries, states the monthly Abstract of Statistics. Those fatally injured comprised 21 drivers, 33 passengers, 24 pedestrians, 22 pushcyclists, 9 motor-cyclists, 3 pillionriders, and 1 not specified. Of the total of 1769 accidents 599 were due to collisions between two or motor vehicles, «118 to collisions between motor vehicles and pedestrians, and 412 to collisions between motor vehicle . and bicycle, while 40 were due to driving oft' the road,_ 67 to running down declivities and falling into rivers or the sea, and 54 to overturning on the roadway.
