SMART PACERS
PABNELL HANDICAP
JOSEDALE GRATTAN IN FORM GOOD CHANCE FOR CONTENDER BY A.BAYDOS. An event-that will create a great deal of interest at Epsom on Saturday is the Pfirnell Handicap, limit 3.3'3, which Jias. drawn a held of 26 goodclass pacers, with only 3G yards separating the limit horses and the backmarkers. The four at the rear of tlie handicap) P,eter Smith, Tinker., Tatigaroa and Transwell, have good credential, lint with many fine improvers ahead of them tlieir contract • will not bo easy. However, they will be better placed 011. the- second day in the two miles event, 1.<13 class. Of those 011 lit yards, Lynn Roy, Isabella Pointer, Hillcrcsl and Bedford have fine form to recommend the.ni, .and Resistance also* impresses as a stayer, although he suffered a lapse of form last season. Bedford is consistent, but appears to lack the element of luck' to notch an outright win. Lynn Rey is likely to develop'into a class pacer. Bronzo Queen did not . race . last season, . but the previous year displayed sound form. Molly Direct,* a smart pacer, is now in- M. Stewart's stable. ' 1 ' : , ;
Some interesting performers- aro on 12 yards, notably last year's Great Northern Trotting Derby winner. Contender, who made a \e'ry creditahfe showing in August, although not quite attuned. Mongolian, who attracted attention by his comfortablo victory at Hutt Park, is entitled to respect- and lie may prove well, up to the local- standard. Lumlnate has been working attractively and Silver Watch is regaining form, but requires 'a firm track to show his best: Forest Jewel,, who seldom runs a poor .race, has never looked better and should make it interesting. The best form among the front-markers this s,oason stands to Josedale Grattan, but his defeat'by Blaydon.at Wellington suggests' that lie, is not as good as • his admirers thought. However, he is just coming to his real form and: it'will take a good norse to beat him in his class.
Don Acron Will be making his first appearance in Aucklnnd, and, although he is not very big, he has made friends by his track displays. He won four races on tho West Coast of tho South Island last season. Don Acron will be bracketed with Lady Vasclyne, who only needs to strike form to be dangerous.
Handicapper is showing improved condition and may race better than he has done in his latest outings. Ranfurly Lass, although off the scene for some time, races well fresh, and her prospects will bo enhanced if the ground is yielding. Marcus made good progress last season and is very useful when fit. The race is full of possibilities, and in a wide range, the chief fancies may be-Jose-dale Grattan, Contender, Mongolian, Forest Jewel, Lynn Rey and Don Acron.
