WIDOW AWARDED £IBSO
MOTOR ACCIDENT Young husband killed [BY ' TELEGRAPH—PRESS ASSOCIATION] WELLINGTON, Wednesday Damages amounting to £IBSO and £l9 funeral expenses were awarded to Evelyn Beatrice Beattie, aged 26, widow of Archie Beattie, aged 29, by a jury/ in the Supreme Court in Wellington. The case was heard before Mr. Justice Smith and was the sequel to a fatal accident in Seatoun on the morning of 18. Defendant was Alexander Duncan, fruiterer, [Wellington.
At the time of his death Beattie was a motor driver employed by the transport division of the Post and Telegraph Department. Defendant was driving along Hector Street in a southerly direction and toward the intersection of Burn ham Street. Beattie at the time was driving a Post and Telegraph Department van in an easterly direction along Burnham Street. A collision occurred and Beattie died from injuries received. Negligence alleged was that defendant failed to give way, drove at a speed excessive in the circumstances, failed to keep a proper look-out and failed to keep as far as practicable to the left. Plaintiff claimed £l9 funeral expenses, and for herself and unborn child £3550 general damages. Liability was admitted and the jury was asked to assess the amount of damages.
