MOSCOW r S BETRAYAL ROME PRESS APPREHENSIVE "NO COUNTRY ENDANGERED" (Received August .25, 12.30 a.m.) LONDON, Aug. 24 Among the few comments in the French press on the Moscow pact, L'Epoque denounces the "scandalous collusion of Naziism and Bolshevism," and declares a backward stop is impossible unless the democracies want to be under Herr Hitler's heel before next year. It concludes: "Let us tell Hitler that if he wants war. We are ready." The Moscow newspaper Izvestia voices official Soviet opinion: "The pact ends Russo-German hostility, which enemies of both sides have tried to fan and perpetunte." According to the Independent Cable Service, the Rome press gives headlines to the signing of the pact. 11 Messagero says: "The pact does little to justify the war measures taken by the democratic Powers. Neither Britain nor France,-nor even Poland, is endangered. Jt is reason itself which is endangered. AVe refuse to believe the extreme, step will be taken."

The Italian press is entirely dedicated to Germany's "great diplomatic victory over the encirclers," which is described ns the greatest blow in the face that British diplomacy has ever received.
