DANZIG PARLEYS DEADLOCK REACHED SWITZERLAND ALARMED TROOPS ON FRONTIERS By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright (Received August '2O, 7.-10 p.m.) LONDON, Aug. 19 The situation in Europe does not favour optimism at the week-end.
The Polish Commissioner for Danzig, M. Chodacki, the President of the Danzig Senate, Herr Arthur Greiser, and the League Commissioner, Dr. Burckhardt, discussed the status of Danzig, upon which a deadlock was reached.
It is reported that Italy increasingly favours a four-Power conference on the subject, but .Germany and Poland aro not interested.
A message from Basle states that an anti-Swiss "whispering campaign" has begun in Southern Germany, and heavy concentration of troops near Basle has resulted in the strengthening of the Swiss garrisons on the Italian and German frontiers, while all roads and bridges are mined and guarded incessantly.
Italian border garrisons are being strengthened and troops are moving up to the French frontier from Trieste, from Venice and from Milan.
German troops are passing across the Brenner Pass to Italy repeatedly, arousing the hostility of the Italian Tyrolese.
