SHIP MASTER'S DEATH

CAPTAIN W. J. WYLLIE LONG SERVICE IN ULIMAROA The death has occurred iu Australia of Captain W. J. Wvllie, formerly one of the best-known ship masters in the New Zealand trade, aged 69 years. Prior to his retirement in 19' Jo after -15 years' service with the company, Captain Wyllie was commodore of the Huddart-Parker Line.

Captain TYvllie joined the company in lSf>o as an officer in the Tasmaniail trade, lie pained his first command, tlio Kxcelsior, at the age of 28. In the New Zealand service his first, ship was the Klingnmite, subsequently wrecked at the Three Kings. The Zealandia, Wimmera and Hiverina were later commands, and in 1908 lie transferred to the Ulimnroa, remaining with her for '2l years. During that time she was continually engaged in the transtasnian service except for the war-years, when she was used as a troopship. Captain Wyllio remained in conimand throughout this period. When the TJlimaroa was replaced in 19:52 by the Zealandia Captain Wyllie took over the latter vessel. He remained in the Zenlandia when she was transferred to the Sydney-Hobnrt run next year, and also served for a short period in the Wanganella, which replaced her in the intercolonial trade.
