GOLF CHAMPIONSHIP
THE AMERICAN OPEN BYRON NELSON WINS (Received June 13, 7.<10 p.m.) PHILADELPHIA, June 12 In the final play-off in the American open golf championship Byron Nelson defeated Craig Wood. The respective scores were 70 and 73. Byron Nelson, winner of the American open championship, is 27 years of age. He finished second in the Texas and Galveston open championships in 1934 and since then has won several titles in different parts of the United States. Ho finished fifth in the British open championship in 1937, in which year ho was in the American Ryder Cup team. Craig Wood, the runner-up, is 36 years of age and has achieved numerous successes since he won the Kentucky open championship in 1925. He finished third in the American open in 1933. He was a member of the American team which visited Australia two years ago and played in an exhibition match at Titirangi, Auckland, on the way home.
