THE CITY RATES
REDUCTION POSSIBLE PREPARATION OF ESTIMATES Finality is heing reached with the preparation of tho City Council estimates and it is expected that these, together with the resolution striking the rates for the current financial year will be presented at a meeting of the council within the next week or 10 days. From all present indications there is practically no likelihood of the high rate of 4s 5Jd in the pound levied during the year just ended being maintained. There were a number of contributing factors 'last year which made it prudent for tho council to increase the rates bv 2Jd. but it would appear that the presentation of the accounts will indicate a slightly improved position While there has yet been no oOicial statement as to how much of this 2Jd increase can be saved to the ratepayers this year it would appear that It'will be within the means of the council to reduce it by about half.
