END OF OLD SHIP
TANIWHA SCRAPPED FORMER PASSENGER VESSEL REMOVAL OF MACHINERY Dismantled almost to the skeleton of her structure the former Northern Company passenger steamer Taniwha, for more than 30 years a popular ship in the trade out of Auckland, now presents a sorry sight at her last berth alongside Julian's "Wall, at the western end of Freeman's Bay. The Taniwha ,was recently sold by the Northern Company to an Auckland machinery firm after being out of commission for more than a vear.
A wooden steamer of 263 tons gross the' vessel was built at Mechanics' Bay in 1898 by Mr. 11. Logan, sen., being specially constructed for river service to Paeroa from Auckland. She was engaged on this run for most of her career, being withdrawn some years ago. After that the Taniwha was occasionally used for peak excursion periods in the Hauraki Gulf and for the past year had been at moorings in Shoal Bay. Slie was brought to Julian's Wall some months ago when discovered to be. in a leaky condition. The old steamer has been in the hands of the shipbreakers for a month and the steering engine, circulating pump, dynamo and boiler comprise the only portions of the vessel's machinery now to be removed. About 10 charges of gelignite were required to break up the steamer's engines when they were being lifted last week. The bridge and wheelhouse were dismantled yesterday and the only superstructure now standing is the saloon and portion of the passengers' quarters aft. As there is no sale in Auckland for the material, considerable quantities of wrought iron are being dumped by the shipbreakers into the muddy harbour bed alongside the Taniwha, but, brass, copper, gun-metal, cast-iron, lead and other metals are being salvaged. Although the wooden hull of the steamer is generally in good condition the action of the salt-water borer while the ship was at her moorings has considerably damaged it below the waterline. No plans have yet been made for -the disposal of the hull after all the equipment has been removed.
