NEW CHURCH

ST. HELIERS BAY ANGLICAN PROPOSALS PERMANENT' BUILDING PLAN To meet future needs in the most rapidly-growing suburban district of Auckland, a scheme"has been launched for the erection of. an Anglican church and hall in permanent materials at St. Heliers Bay, to replace the present St. Philip's Church. The proposals were approved at a recent meeting of parishioners, and it was agreed that the foundation-stone should lie laid during the coining centennial celebrations. The vicar, the Hev. L. E. Cartridge, and the churchwardens were authorised to make preliminary arrangements. The parish of Tamaki has an area of more than six square miles, and a population of slightly over 6000. It is considered certain that the district will ultimately be subdivided into a group of parishes, and the purpose of the scheme is to provide a central or mother church for them all. Hall Attached to Church

A design prepared by Mr. Charles Towle, architect, of Auckland, is for a church in a modernised Gothic style, seating 550 people, with a tower and ail attached liall to seat 400. The buildings have been planned to suit the existing church site at the junction of Paunui Street and St. Heliers Bay Road. i , It is proposed to place the hall with one end abutting 011 the north side of the nave of the church at the western end, and the tower, with a lady chapel beneath it, will stand within the angle formed by the two • structures. Three Successive Stages

Both the church and hall will be of reinforced concrete construction, the former faced externally with brick and the latter with tinted plaster. The auxiliary rooms of the hall will be in a basement under the church. It is intended to carry out the building seheme'in stages, as funds permit. Under this plan thejchancel and lady chapel will be erected first, the nave of the present church being temporarily attached to it. The permanent nave and tower will be built next, and finally the hall. It is estimated very approximately that the first two stages will cost £7OOO each and the final stage £IOOO, making a total of £IB,OOO.
