Assembly Plant In Newmarket
PLANS TO TURN OUT TEN CARS A DAY
, aN important link in the developf\ ment of the motor industry 4 ■ •in the Auckland Province was forged this week, when work began in the new assembly plant built for Dominion Motors, Limited, in Newmarket. It will bo three months before machinery is installed, and assembly work gets into full swing, with a staff of 120 Bands steadily employed. The floor space in the new building, notable for its striking design, is perhaps as extensive as any to bo iound in any building in Auckland. It covers an area of 45,000 square feet, and if necessary it could be extended by another 25,000 squnrei feet. The building is now but a shell, storing a number of new cars, assembled there. In one corner a five-ton hoist has been installed to handle cases containing new cars and tractors.
. Much has yet to bo done before the complete assembly plant is in operation. Many machines have to be erected, a<nd runways placed for the conveyance of cars in the course of construction and painting. The car will gradually take shape right along the line, and emerge
ns a finished article, with all refinements, ready for sale, at the end of the building facing the street line. At full capacity the plant will turn out 10 cars a dav.
Illumination and ventilation have been carefully planned in the new building. Six tiers in the roof, contain perpendicular windows, running, from side to side of the building, and two walls are given over generously to window space, so that in all there* are over 1200 window panes. In addition, the interior is finished in aluminium paint, which improves the lighting all round.
