BRITON!} FOR AUSTRALIA MINISTER GIVES FIGURES LONDON, Feb. 10 Some 1:259 Government - assisted migrants went to Australia in ],938. ■Replying to a series of questions in the House of Commons to-day the Dominions Secretary, Sir Thomas Inskip, gave these figures. In addition, about 2000 persons went overseas under the auspices of the voluntary societies, with contributions from the Government. The Minister did riot state how many of these migrants went to Australia, as a complete return was not yet available, but he added that only 12 went to New Zealand under the Empire Settlement Act and 137 to Southern Rhodesia.
Asked vrhat proportion of the £1,500,000 allowed under the Act had been expended, Sir Thomas replied that the total expenditure under the Acts of 1922 and 1937 in the financial year ended March 31, 1938, was £21,866. The expenditure in the nine months to December 31, 1938, was £32,591, and the estimated expenditure for the year ended March 31, 1939, would bo £45,000. Grants hud been made also toward the administrative expenses of certain migration societies, amounting to £6745, for the year ended March 31, 1938. and were expected to reach £10,600 in the present financial year.
