DROWNED IN RIVER

MAORI SWIMMER'S FATE [by telegraph—owx correspondent] KAIKOHE, Thursday A Maori named Piuara Hohepa, aged 28, married, was drowned while trying to swim across the Waima River yesterday afternoon A companion, Simon Moses, crossed the river first, and Pinara Hohepa tried to swim the river after him. Ho managed to swim about three-quarters of the distance, but then sank. The body was recovered by the police the same evening. The river at the spot where the fatality occurred is about four chains wide and it is understood that the victim was not a particularly good swimmer. At an inquest held before the district coroner, Mr. A. E. Andrews, today, a verdict of accidental drowning was returned
