LADY STELLA PREVAILS TE HUIA BEATS WHITE GOLD GOOD EFFORT BY RED WITCH [by telegraph—OWN correspondent] WANGANUI, Thursday The Hawke's Bay marc Lady Stella won-the Westmero Hurdles all the way. She reached for one or two fences and jumped big, but gave a safe display and never really looked like losing. Hanover was nearest her in the running, but he tired badly at the end and was beaten out of a place by Rod Rufus and Kn'theos. Red Rufus was gaining on the winner at the end. LCnthcns was also running on. although without any chance of getting up. Warehi jumped badly and Doctor Defoe ran about at his fences.

There was a long delay at the 'start of the Juvenile Handicap, caused by Allcjf, who eventually got away, well, and made a bold showing. Military Maid and La Bru made the pace from Allez, Submission. Lord Midas and Varimond, who dosed on the leaders entering the straight, Lord Midas going to the outside and Varimond on the rails. La Bru drew ahead in the straight and was the winner until the final strides, when Varimond got through and beat her narrowly. Submission was a fair third, with Allez iourth. Then followed Lord Midas, with the others bunched, except Pearl of Asia, who got left.

V arimond won well and was going strongly at the finish. She has improved. La Bru ran a good race, but Lord Midas failed to muster up the expected pace. Fiancee Wins Comfortably

After a series of disappointments, Fiancee won the Kai Iwi Maiden Race fairly comfortably. Fiancee was always prominent and, after allowing The Smiler to take over the lead in the middle stages, she drew to the front entering the straight and stayed there. The favourite, Le Marquis, ran on better than Little Dorrit for second, both having every chance. Ruling Star was only a head away, after drifting very badly at the end of a furlong. The Victory Hack, for apprentice riders, saw a desperate finish, the Hawke's Bay pair, Red Witch and •Morning Flight, dead-heating, a short head in front of Mataroa. Red Witch made the running with Dark Eagle, who was supplanted by Amatory as they entered the straight. However, Amatory failed to carry on, and Mataroa, who had always been handy, threw out a challenge, followed by Morning Flight, who had been fairly well back in the running. There was nothing between these three at the finish, with Amatory fourth. The bunch was headed by Dark ICagle. Red Witch's performance was very good, as with a 51b. penalty she gave all her opponents weight. Slow Pace in the Cup

Although run over a mile and four and a-quarter furlongs, the Wanganui Cup was anything but a test of stamina and Siegmund, second to last early, was able to go up in behind the leaders at the end of a hair-mile without effort and finally go to the front over the last half-mile. Siegmund was able to move up without taking too much out of himself and. after the early leaders, Brazen King and The Bigot, had weakened, he was able to fight olf the lat<» challenges of Tiger Gain and Parquet, although they ran him close. The time was nearly 8s slower than the hurdles, both over the same distance, which was a good illustration of the slow early pace. It was not surprising, therefore, that The Bigot should have beaten himself by pulling hard early, and that a stayer like Wotan was not seen to advantage. White Gold showed a lot of pace but in front in the Ta.vforth Hack Handicap, hut she out up only a feeble effort against the final challenge of Te Huia. who beat her easily War Lap was » very poor third and Joe Louis was fourth. Te Hnia gave R. Brough's Hawera stable a double for the day. A Decisive Victory

Ecstatic had a decisive win in the Petre Hack Handicap. She got out first and then dropped in behind Gold Petal. moving forward again entering the straight to have the race won a long way from home. Gold Petal faded out. leaving Prettv Lass to run on for second from 'Trebor, who was not prominent earl.v, and made no a lot of ground. Amoroso was fourth without promising to do any better, and Red Cat was next. Red Cat was steadied by her weight. Amigo proved too good for Laughing Lass in the Flying Handicap. He got away well and then drifted back to fourth, Lifeguard and Sporting Gift making the pace from Laughing Lass. Amigo 'came forward entering the straight and. although Laughing Lass responded well, he beat her. comfortably Notium came right from the rear for third
