AIR FORCE BOMBING
CHOICE OF TARGET MARLBOROUGH CONTROVERSY [by TELEGRAPH —PRESS association J BLENHEIM, Tuesday An advance party arrived to-day to make arrangements for the Wellington Territorial Bombing Squadron, which is to undergo training at the Blenheim ac.odrome during the next fortnight. Discussing the use of Lake< Grassmere, which is a bird sanctuary, for bombing, practice, against which the Marlborough Acclimatisation Society is protesting, members of the party reiterated the opinion that the ducks and swans would not be seriously affected. The trouble was that the nature and effect of the bombs which it proposed to use were not understood. It was explained that they were not explosive bombs in the accepted sense of the word, but merely containers of a liquid that emitted smoke on contact, causing no Jmrm whatever. They were commonly used in England on bird sanctuaries, and bird life disregarded them completely. Lake Grassmere, on account of its extensive flat surface, was ideal for observing bombing practice. 1 The Acclimatisation Society is leav-* ing the matter in the hands of the Internal Affairs Department.
