He is engaged in tho Great Northern Derby. . Defaulter, who was bred by Mr. Lan Macrae, Masterton, was included with the collection of yearlings submitted at auction at the sale held at Trentham in January, 1937, and as ho was bought for tho moderate outlay of 170 guineas, the Canterbury sportsman, Mr. H. MELBOURNE CUP CATALOGUE'S SURPRISE When Catalogue was shipped from Nbw Zealand to Sydney in September, it created very little talk, and the •announcement made of the arrival of. the brown gelding .in Australia was conveyed in three small lines. Although Catalogue had scored two successive victories in the C.J\C. Winter Cup* the fact that the distance of the Riccarton race extended only to a-milo fufnished no line -as ;to hb. ability. to stay two miles, and that stood in the way -of his securing : anlJrtiiinE approaching notice for tho race at Flemington. Howover, when tho Cup came up for decision the fact that the veteran actually led tho field throughout aver the concluding ■ seven furlongs is an incident that affords room for thought.

When Wotan scored his victory in the Melbourne Cup two 3 T ears ago, it was contended in some well-versed' quarters that if the pace had been less severe in the first 12 furlongs the result might have been different; In regard to Catalogue's victory, _it is argued tho slow pace set in the early stages of the contest' was against several of Catalogue's notable opponents. However, Catalogue's easy victory must bo allowed to entitle him to a good certificate as a stayer. The respective victories of Wotan and Catalogue, being of the sensational order registered within the space of two years, have given New Zealand a wide advertisement as a home of the thoroughbred. AUSTRALIA'S CHAMPION BRILLIANT RECORD OF AJ AX Prior to the opening of tho V.R.C. Spring Meeting, the confident prediction was made that Ajax would capture the ■ whole of the \yeight-for-age races at the Flemington gathering, and the son of Heroic fulfilled anticipations in a manner that kept him in the full glare of the limelight. Up to the present, Ajax has! contested 25 races, and his winning in prize-money amount to £'24.,475. A consideration of the record bearing on tho total sum shows that the most -valuable races won by Ajax were the A.J.C. Sires' Produce Stakes (.£2940), Caulfield Guineas (£2100), V.A.T.C. Futurity Stakes (£2300) and V.R.C. Newmarket Handicap (£2250). Following is tho full record of his performances:— : I

The only race in which Ajax ran unplaced was the V.R.C. Sires' Produce Stakes, an event for two-year-olds, decided at Flemington in the autumn of 1937. Ajax ran wide at the head of the straight. Probably nothing more will be exacted from Ajax during the , present year, and his reappearance under silk may not be looked for until February, when the Caulfield Futurity Stakes, seven furlongs, comes up for decision. He won the race last year under a 151b. penalty.
