HOT FANCY FAILS PEERLESS DEFINITELY BEST CANTERBURY CUP CONTEST I [by telegraph—OWN correspondent] CHRIBTCHURCH, Wednesday Disdain was sent out at a* very cramped price for the New Zealand Oaks, but she was in trouble after turning for home. Kilrobe went away to the lead and piloted Disdain along the back, with Homily, Russian Ballet and Lady Rosette -in line next, and Peerless handy. . Kilrobe lasted to the straight entrance, where Disdain headed her, but Homily and then Peerless quickly passed Disdain. The two lastnamed carried oil for an interesting battle, Peerless always holding her rival safe.- Russian Ballet outstayed Disdain for third place, several lengths away. Kilrobe and Lady Rosetto were tailed off. Good Passage refused to line up at the harrier arid, rearing up when being led in, she broke loose. She galloped-to the scraping enclosure and was withdrawn :From the race. In all probability she will be sent to the stud.
There was no doubt about the superiority of Peerless on the day. She was ridden a patient and well-judged race by A. E. Ellis, who took S. Wilson's pljiee in the saddle. Homily was very unsettled before the start and she took a lot out of herself, but nevertheless made a game figh't. Defaulter, ridden at a little overweight by L. J. Ellis, decisively outclassed his four opponents in the Canterbury Cup. He quickly assumed charge and opened up a break of four lengths;' through the back stretch. Siegmund, Wild Chase and Willie Win reduced the gap rounding the top, but Defaulter drew away again and he was still clear, entering the straight, from Willie Win, Wild: Chase and Siegmund, with Arctic King in last place. Willie Win momentarily appeared to be drawing upi to Defaulter, but when the latter was asked a question, he went right away and, not showing any sigu of slowing up, he won with a great deal in hand from Willie Win, who comfortably beat Wild Chase. Arctic King was two lengths away, with Siegmund well in the rear. -
Defaulter added to the great record of three-year-olds in the race by an effortless win and he and his rider were (jfiven an enthusiastic reception on returning to the birdcage. Willie Win made a creditable effort and gave further evidence of a return to good form. Wild Chase was not dangerous once heads were turned for home. Arctic King was always.well away from the leader. ,
