ENTERTAINMENTS

CIVIC THEATRE The story of Pepe Le Moko, daring jewel thief, is told in the thrilling production "Algiers," .which is to continue its successful season at the Civic Theatre to-day. The part of the notorious- French criminal is brilliantly played by Charles Bover, while Sigrid Gurie and Hcdy Lamarr also are in the cast. A feature of "Algiers" is its remarkable photography, which is equal to anything previously seen on the screen. An excellent supporting programme includes special pictures of the running of the 1938 Melbourne Cup. REGENT THEATRE Thrills beneath the sea abound in "Submarine D-l," the gripping film which continues to attract large, audiences to the Regent Theatre, Pat O'Brien, Wayne Morris and Frank MeHtigh have the leading roles, those of engineers who test out submarines of new design, On the same programme is the first all-colour film of New Zealand, "Long Bright Land." ST. JAMES* THEATRE The outstanding musical film "Girl of the Golden West," in which Nelson Eddy and Jeanette 'Mat-Donald appear, will conclude a most successful season at St. James' Theatre to-day. "MAN-PROOF" The emotional story of Mimi Swift, the girl who finds herself as a bridesmaid at the wedding of the man she had hoped would marry, her, is unfolded in ''Man-Proof," the outstanding drama which is to commence a season at St. James' Theatre to-morrow. In the role of Mimi, Mvrna Loy gives a fine acting performance and one that will win her many new admirers. The story of "Man-Proof" tells how Mimi becomes slightly intoxicated after the wedding and, while in this state, declares frankly that she intends to recapture the bridegroom, whose part is played by Walter Pidgeon. Audiences will find sorrow, romance, laughter and excitement as Mimi goes about winning back the man she loves from his wife (Rosalind Russell). Miss Loy's performance is stated to be one of the finest of her triumphant career, and this is saying a great deal, as she has been responsible for many great portrayals. Also in the large cast is Franchot Tone, who appears as .Jimmy Kiltnartin, Mimi's blunt but faithful feiend. Four of America's leading authors had a hand in the writing of "Man-Proof."

MAYFAIR THEATRE The popular Ginger Rogers appears with Douglas Fairbanks, junior, in ** Having Wonderful Time," the sparkling comedy-romance which will conclude a season at the Mayfair Theatre to-day. All theatre-goers, young and old alike, have heard of the fame as an actor of Rudolph Valentino. The greatest film ever made by this immortal actor was "The Sliiek," and this production has been revived in Hollywood and has been brought again to the screen. When this sound-synchronised film was presented in America recently it created unprecedented enthusiasm. "The Shiek" is due to commence a season at the Mayfair Theatre to-morrow.

EMBASSY THEATRE Incidents in the life of David Garrick, who in the 18th century was hailed as the greatest actor of all time, are brought to the screen in "The Great Garriek," one of the cleverest comedies of the year, which is to commence a season at the Embassy Theatre to-day. The part of the immortal stage favourite is ' brilliantly handled by Brian Aherne. The film opens, with Garriek about to leave England for a tour of France. Unfortunately some over-enthusiastic people say that he as going, over "to teach the French how to act." This statement readies the ears of the heads of the French stage jind they decide to teach Garriek a lesson. They rent an inn just outside Paris and put in actors and actresses as the staff of the place. Garrick and his valet Tubby (Edward Everett Horton) come to stay at the inn, in which strange things soon start to happen. Garriek is clever enough to notice the theatrical atmosphere about the place, however, and he cleverly foils the plot. Olivia do Havilland has the main feminine role, that of a beautiful young French girl who seeks shelter at the inn when her coach breaks down. Thinking she is one of the schemers, Garriek treats her just as he treats the others. When he finds out that the girl is really not part of the plot, and realises that he loves her, he is" plunged into despair. The film, however, is brought to a most satisfactory climax.

STRAND THEATRE The introduction of syncopated rhythm into music is vividlv portrayed in' "Alexander's Ragtime Band," the outstanding musical film which has proved so popular with Auckland audiences and which is now enjoying a successful season at the Strand Theatre. Alice Faye presents a number of Irving Berlin's "most tuneful melodies, while others in the cast are "Tyrone Power and Don Ameche. STATE THEATRE The musical film, "Everybody Sing," with Allan Jones and Judy Garland in the leading roles, will, conclude a successful season at the State Theatre to-night. The outstanding Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer "musical production, "Rosalie," will commence a season at the theatre to-morrow. The fine voice of Nelson Eddy is heard to great advantage in this film, which also has Eleanor Powell in a leading role. An excellent supporting programme, which will include a feature entitled "Surf Heroes," will also commence tomorrow.

STAR CINEMA An enthralling drama, the film "Dead End," is tne main attraction on the current programme at the Star Cinema. A second full-length feature is "It Can't Last Forever."

CRYSTAL PALACE AND RIALTO The talented young actress, Simonc Simon, appears in "Josette," the main attraction to be shown at the Crystal Palace and Rialto Theatres to-night. The thrilling mystery film, "Mr. Moto Takes a Chance," in which Peter Lorre has the leading role, also will be shown.

TUDOR CINEMA The entertaining comedy "Second Honeymoon" will be presented at the Tudor Cinema to-night. There is a splendid supporting programme. ' BERKELEY. MISSION BAY Gary Grant gives one of the finest performances of his career in "lopper," the hilarious comedy to be shown tonieht at the Berkeley Theatre, Mission Bay. ASTOR THEATRE "Dead End" and "The Lady Escapes" are the two full-length films to be shown at the Astor Theatre tonight. PRINCE EDWARD THEATRE The hilarious production "F-Man" will be shown in conjunction with "The Affairs of Susan" at the Prince Edward Theatre to-night. The programme is a well-varied one that should appeal to all.

MAJESTIC THEATRE The hilarious Australian production "On Our, Selection" will conclude a successful season nt the Majestic Theatre to-day; Mr. Lindsay Fabre and "Aussie," the boxing kangaroo, will appear on the stage during the afternoon and evening sessions. Hailed as the greatest prison drama yet brought to the screen, the film "Penitentiary" will continence a season at the Majestic Theatre to-morrow. John Howard has the leading role in this production, some of the scenes of which were actually filmed in the bin gaols of America. A second-attraction will be "Little Miss Roughneck," in which Edith Fellows and Leo Carrillo appear.

ROXY AND TIVOLI THEATRES The fine voice of Dick Foran, the popular singing cowboy, is heard to advantage in several numbers in "The Devil's Saddle Legion," the main attraction 011 the current programme at the Boxy and Tivoli Theatres., Foran appeal's as the chief of the legion, an interpid band of young men pledged to stand for justice in the old lawless days of the West. Members of the legion are involved in some thrilling encounters with an outlaw band, but finally succeed in avenging the many misdeeds of the outlaws. Anna Nagel has the leading feminine role and gives a performance well above the average. The programme is strengthened by the inclusion of "The Adventurous Blonde." a second full-length film. An enthralling mystery story. "The Adventurous Blonde has as its main players Glenda Farrell, who takes the role of "Torcliv" Blane, the girl reporter, and Barton Mac Lane, who appears a$ Detective-Lieutenant Steve Mcßride, Iter sweetheart. These two are involved in a scries of thrilling adventures as they track down a murderer and solve a baffling mystery. The programme is one well above the average and should appeal to all. STATE THEATRE, ONEHUNGA The popular guest night session will be observed at tlic State Theatre, Onehunga, to-night, when the main attractions will be "Secret Agent" and "Broadway Hostess."
