DIRECT APPROACH
GENERAL APPEASEMENT ]MR. CHAMBERLAIN'S METHOD GOVERNMENT FACES REALITIES LONDON, Oct. 24 Commenting on the speech made by Lord -Halifax, the Daily Mail, in an editorial, says that he faced the realities of general appeasement, which is not achievable by hurling abuse across the frontiers of Europe. Mr. Chamberlain's method is the only one, namely, direct approach. However, in the meanwhile Britain must rearm in an armed world. The Daily Telegraph praises Lord Halifax's candour and appreciates his and the Government's realisation that tho country must take all essential measures for safety. It emphasises that Britain is obliged to recognise that Bhe is vuliferablo as never before, and that her defences are no longer enough. "We may have to consent to a new ordering of our social structure lest our fitness to face tho new world will be our capacity to accept obligations hitherto spared to us," states the paper. "It is for the Government to utilise the indomitable spirit aroused in tho nation. It is for the people to ma&e the Government's policy feasible and fruitful." GERMAN APPROVAL LORD HALIFAX'S SPEECH J3EITER RELATIONS EXPECTED (Received October 25, 10.45 p.m.) BERLIN, Oct. 24 Lord Halifax's speech was well received, especially his statement that peace does not come by waiting. This is interpreted as meaning that Britain will shortly make some positive move for better Anglo-German relations.
