YACHT RACING

OPENING OF THE SEASON VARIOUS FIXTURES ALLOTTED The racing dates for the 1938-39 yachting season in Auckland were allotted to the various clubs at the annual meeting of the Auckland Yacht and Motor-Boat Association last night. Mr. C. H. T. Palmer presided over a full attendance of delegates.

The season will be officially opened on November 12 and, with the exception of the ltoyal New Zealand Yacht Squadron, which will hold races for classes A. B, C and M, all the other clubs will hold combined events.

Racing dates were allotted as follows: November 5. —Richmond Cruising Club, race for 18ft and under classes. November 12. —Official opening of the season; cruising and harbour races for all clubs.

November 19. —Takapuna Boating Club, Com well Cup trials; Tamaki Yacht Club, teams' races for T and Y and M and V classes. • November 2fi.—Takapuna Boating Club, Comwell Cup trials. December :i.—Takapuna Boating Club, annual regatta; Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron, harbour races tor keel yachts and M class. December 10 Roval Akirana Yacht Club, cruising races to Awaroa Bay, harhour races, small classes; Takapuna Boating Club, Cornwell Cup trials. December 17. —Richmond and Ponsonb.v Cruising Clubs, combined harbour and cruising races; Takapuna Boating Club, Cornwell Cup trials. December 25. —Royal Akarana Yacht Club, race to t'owes Bay for class V.

January 7. —Takapuna Boating Ciub, race for Z class.

March 24. —'Royal Akarana Yacht Club, start of race for Balokovic Cup, March 25. —Victoria Cruising Club, harbour raoes, all classes.

April 22 —Official closing of the season, combined harbour and cruising races. The Manukau Yacht and Motor-Boat Club was allotted November 12 for its oificial opening day and February lii for its annual regatta and championships. The election cf officers resulted as follows:—Chairman, Mr. C. H. T. Palmer; vice-chairman, Mr. M. K. Draffln; honorary secretary and treasurer, Mr. A. J. Collings; auditor, Mr. B. W. Beaumont; measurers for open boats, Messrs. E. J. Kelly, A. V. Tyer; mullet boats, Mr. G. S. Miller; honorary solicitors, tho Hon. John Alexander, M.L.C., t-nd Mr. H. J. C. George; starter, Mr. E. Culhano; assistants, Messrs. G. S. Miller, G. E. Laycock, H. Claridge; timekeepers, Messrs. 0. Johnson, G. E. Laycock; recorders, Messrs. T. McKnight, E. Haines, A. J. Collings, R. Wilson; judge, harbour races, Mr. G. S. Miller; cruising races, Mr. E. J. Kelly; sailing committee, officers of the day and Messrs. R. H. McKay and C. Daw.

CONTESTS IN AUCKLAND INVITATION TO AUSTRALIANS SYDNEY, Oct. 25 Messrs. G. M. Dennes and T. C. Webster Auckland sailing enthusiasts, attended a meeting yesterday of the Sydney Flying Squadron and invited that club to send representative 18-foot yachts to Auckland for the Centenary in Ji>4o, and also in February, 11)31). Mr. H. Flegg. president of the squadron, said that, although there was little chance of his club participating next February, he was hopeful that at least two boats would comiMJte at the Centenary Regatta in 1040. A committee of yachtsmen representing the majority of the local yacht clubs was responsible for issuing the invitation to the New South Wales authorities. A series of three championship races has been arranged for February 11, 15 and iy for a cup or other trophy and £SO. Club races will also be held on February 12 by tho Point Chevalier Sailing Club and on February 30 by the Tauiaki Yacht Club. According lo a cablegram receiver! last month from Mr. Oiltinan, secretary of tho New South Wales Sailing League, four boats were likely to bo 6ent to Auckland.
