FIFTY YEARS AGO
CHARITABLE AID CALLS Alarm was expressed 50 years ago at the growing liability imposed on charitable aid resources by the willingness of married men to leave their families to the care of the community. The following is an extract from the Zealand Herald of October 26, 1888: "The Charitable Aid Boards of New Zealand might, wo think, plunge into the question of whether marriage is a failure," and give a very emphatic answer that from their point of view it is. Married men who find work scarce in the place where they reside sell their furniture to raise money to take them away, and then the grasswidow, with any encumbrances there may chance to be simply interviews the officer of the Charitable Aid Board. Thera seems absolutely no possibility of applying any check to this sort or thing. The Charitable Aid Board can only take up a defensive attitude ana decline to assist where they believe tha the mother or children can () earD enough to support the household.
