SUCCESSOR TO NURMI

Taisto Maki, the Finnish athlete, who recently broke the world's record for 10,000 metres at Tammerfors with a run of 30m 6s, is considered likely to overshadow even the great Paavo Nurmi. A remarkable feature of Maki's running in his record effort was the even pace he maintained for each 1000 metres. Four of the 10 stages were run in the same time, while the maximum variation was only five seconds. Maki will attempt the 5000 metres record next year and will compete in all distances from 1500 to 10,000 metres. After the 1940 Olympic Games he says he will take up real long-distance running. He will appear in his first marathon race in the autumn of 1940.
