SEAWARD DEFENCE

ANTI-SUBMARINE VESSEL CONSTRUCTION IN AUSTRALIA CANBERRA. Oct. 20 The first of the three seaward defence vessels that are being built by the Commonwealth Government will be launched at Cockatoo Island Dockyard on October 29. Tho Minister of Defence, Mr. H. V. Thorbv, states that she will be named Kookaburra.

The Kookaburra, which belongs to the class of craft known as boom defence vessels, is equipped to erect, maintain and operate submarine booms. Booms are erected at the entrances of important harbours to prevent the entry of submarines. The vessel will be employed in peace time as a training tender to the antisubmarine pchool at Sydney, which it is expected will be completed in December. The school will be used for the instruction of the personnel of the Royal Australian Navy and Royal Australian Naval Reserve in all phases of activities.
