TENNIS VISITORS

AUSTRALIAN PLAYEKS ARRIVAL NEXT FRIDAY EXHIBITION IN AUCKLAND MATCHES AT STANLEY STREET The Australian 1 Davis Cup tennis pla.yers and the Australian ladies' team which competed in tournaments overseas recently will arrive in Auckland by the Monterey next Friday and will play exhibition matches at the Stanley Street courts. They will be assisted by A. D. Brown, holder of the Dominion singles title, who has just returned from England. Auckland enthusiasts will see A. K. Quist and J. Bromwich, two players who are likely to bring the Davis Cup back to Australia. Without J. D. Budge, who is stated to be turning professional, it is unlikely that the United States could save the Cup against Australia's full strength. Quist and Bromwich are one of the strongest doubles combinations in the world and although they were defeated in the United States final by Budgo and Mako they reversed this result in the Davis Cup final and' "won G—o, 6—3, 6—4, 6—2.

H. C. Hopman, manager, who i« 32 years of age, is the veteran of the team. He first played for Australia in the Davis Cup in 1928 and has an imposing doubles record. That he ha 3 lost little of his skill is shown by his win of the Pacific Coast singles championship at the beginning of this month. In the quarter-final of this event he defeated J. D Budge, 6 —2, 5—7, 6 —l, and in the final he accounted for J. Tidball, 5—7, 6 —2, , 7—5, B—6.8 —6. With H. Schwartz, South Australian champion, he won the Pacific South-West doubles championship, defeating Budge and Mako, 3—6, 6—3. 6 —3, 6 —3, in the semi-final, and Quist and Bromwich in the final, 3—6, 6 —3, 6—3, 6—4. Bromwich is chosen by many good judges as the probable successor to Budge should the latter turn professional. At present he is ranked first in Australia and third in the world by A. Wallis Myers, although a number of other competent critics place him second. Quist is ranked second in Australia and fifth or sixth in the world ranking. In the Pacific South-West championships he caused a sensation by defeating J. D. Budge, 7 —5, 6 —2, 5 —7, 6 —3. This was Budge's first defeat in a major tournament since F. J. Perry beat him in the national singles championship in 1936.

In Misses N. Wynne, T. Coyne, D. Stevenson and Mrs. H. Hopman, Auckland enthusiasts will see the first four lady players of Australia. All have performed well overseas against the world's best exponents and their appearance on Friday will be awaited with interest. . Misses Wynne and Coyne are a particularly strong doubles combination and in addition to other successes while abroad they won the ladies' doubles championship of Germany, which provided an all-Australian final, Misses Wynne and Coyne winning 6 —2, 6 —3. Miss Wynne is the only one of the four players who has obtained a world ranking.
