WHITEBAIT SEASON
HEAVY RUNS IN WAIKATO FISHERMEN'S GOOD CATCHES WEEK'S EARNINGS HIGH [FROM OCR OWN* correspondent] PUKEKOHE, Friday There have been heavy runs of wliitebait in the estuary of the Waikato River this week. After a long wait since the opening of the season on July 1, whitebait fishermen are now receiyr, ing rich returns. July and tho first part of August brought very meagre results, some of the fishermen barely making enough to cover food bills. The runs have continued to improve since and, with the price on the river keeping up to Is 9d per lb., earnings this week have been very high. One man had received £22 up to tonight for the week's catches. On his best day he secured 1171b. of whitebait. The cannirfc factory on the riverside near Te Kohanga commenced operations at the beginning of September and is now handling a large quantity of whitebait. Heavier supplies are also being sent from the AVaikato to shops in the North Island, but, as the weather becomes wanner, this trade will gradually cease, owing to the difficulty of keeping the whitebait fresh in transit. vfsv
