RACING PROSPECTS

AVONDALE CARD SINGLE-POOL BETTING / STRONG FIELDS ENGAGED fifteen horses in the cup KILONSA SOLIDLY FANCIED The spring racing season in Auckland will be commenced to-day with the opening of the Avondale Jockey Club's meeting. Strong fields are engaged and the racing should be highly interesting if the conditions are favourable. The 'course dried rapidly under the influence of the sun and wind during the week but the rain yesterday softened it on the surface and the state of the going will depend upon the weather. The chief event "ill be the Avondale Cup, in which 15 horses are engaged, and a fine contest appears assured. Other races likely to create considerable interest are tin'" Champion Hack Plate, Avondale Stakes and Flying Handicap. The single-pool system of betting will be used. Following are details of the fields, with a review of the prospects in each race by "ArMier": — 12.0 —MAIDEN PLATE. Sweepstakes of X2 each, with 1:200 added; 7 fur. st. lb. st. lb. Atta Jack . Frontino showed improvement in finishing second to Jan Ridd at the Pakuranga Hunt meeting last month and Kaspian displayed promise in notching a second and a third in three starts last season. Paddy the Rip and Valdene are improvers and should have chances if they repeat the form that enabled them to fill minor places behind Olympfis at the Pakuranga Hunt meeting. Silver Quex has been galloping well and a repetition of her track form should enable her to show up. Spearford is on the upgrade and other possibilities are Gav Hussar, Lady Defoe and Penzance. Some who may find favour are POCKET VENTS, KASPIAN, ■ PADDY THE RIP. 12.40 —KINGS LAND HURDLES, Of £250; l'/a miles st. lb. st. lb. Simint and lllimani have no recent form, but they are winners, and the latter has been working well. Golden Spahi and Te Monatekapa i-re possibilities and Queen Lu, who was third to Inness Lad .and All Irish at Tauranga in June, has been working in improved fashion. Electric Flash is a dashing fencer and should not be without prospects, while Car Leaf and Stanstead are likely improvers. Flash By finished second •to Floodlight at the Pakuranga Hiint meeting and is a young horse who should be all the better for the experience. Solid support may come for ERINATION, QFEEN LU, LLLIMANI. Prival, Sir Tommy and Forest Acre are all capable of running the distance smartly and their track work indicates that they are in good heart. Royevrus . displayed marked promise as a two-year-old last season and he may make his presence felt, even though he is conceding weight to older horses. Huntingmore's third at the Pakuranga Hunt meeting indicated that he was close to form and he may be very dangerous. Ohmaha and' Fleetwind should have chances if they reproduce the dash they have been showing on the tracks, while Bright Wings-and Eastern Heir are speedy gallopers who displayed much promise last season. High Sea has good condition after recent racing to assist Jiitti and Ngawiri is a speedy beginner who is running on better than formerly. Paint has started only twice and made a good impression when he won at his second attempt last season. Bonnybelle and Sir Robin have shown pace and Phildale appears to be on the Nnprovo. The'favourites may be - ' J HIGH SEA, HUNTINGMORE, NGAWIRI. 2.7—AVONDALE CUP, Of £000; 1% miles v fit. lb. gin? Most ot the runners will be inakius their debut and in the absence of any torm the race bears a very open aspect. The fact that Silver Bat, Biddy Girl and Varimond have had the benefit of a race may be in their favour. However, t hey were not impressive at Wanganui, although \ nrimond yppeals as a likely improver. Noble Fox showed promise in the two-year-old parade at the Pakuranga Hunt meeting last month, while Orelio, who cost 1000 guineas, Beau Kepaire, a half-brother to Koyal Chief, (Jav Movie, Anopheles, Royal .1 ray and La Vie have all shown pace on the tracks. Popular fancies may be ORELIO, BEAU REPAIILE, VARIMOND. 3.3 I—CHAMPION PLATE, Of £3">t); three-year-olds 8.0, four-year-olds and upwards S.O; nuuden threo-year-olds at time of starting allowed Tib, four-year-olds and upwards 101b; 7 fur. st. lb. st. lb. Coronation has yet to win, but lie will have the benefit of a maiden allowance and might go well, as he seems to have benefited by his two races at Wanganui last week. Vaalsstar and Milanion have also shown promise, but the former appears more favourably placed in the Maiden Plate. Of the older horses, Sly Eox, who is in fine form after his win at Wanganui. may be the best prospect, although Anion, Ringshot, Requiem and Valspear are all capable of adding interest to the contest. Anion has been working well, but there appears to be some doubt'whether he will run. However, if he is produced, he may take a lot of beating. The best supported may be OLYMPUS, ANION, SLY FOX. 4.I2—FLYING HAHPICAP, Ot £300; 6 fur. st. lb. st. lb. Majority may not be (|uite ready and a better prospect may bo Royal .Bachelor, who showed that he was close to form by finishing third to Flood Tide and Kilonsa over a mile at the Pakuranga Hunt meeting. Young Paddon and Maori Song were first and second respectively in the Admiralty Handicap, at Ellerslie last month and on l-thaf' form both should have prospects., Erndale should have a chance if the ground is soft and Trilliarch appears to have improved in condition since ' finishing third in the Admiralty Handicap. Hot Box was a good twoyearrold and is in with lib. under weight-for-.age.- . Rulette, Triune and Palustre are smart sprinters, while Calorie and Fidelis were winners as two-year-olds. last season. The main fancies may include ROYAL BACHELOR, TE HERO, HOT BOX. 4.SS—SWANSON HANDICAP. Of £200; 1 milo st. lb. st. lb. Requiem ..91 Gold Eagle . 7 8 Susan ... Susan won recently at New Plymouth and is more solid than formerly. However, she is likelv to find it difficult at the weights to defeat Long Span, who won in pleasing fashion at the Pakuranga Hunt meeting. Erlick is another improver and he was fourth in the race won bv Long Span last month. Mio Fratollo and Raceline are capable of creditable but they do not appeal as much as Vaalso, who has not raced with the best of luck. Jayola has galloped well since failing at the Pakuranga Hunt meeting, but has yet to prove his worth at a mile. Gold Eagle has been working in good style and may be the best of those near the minimum, although Captain Bruco and Beverley are both possibilities. The main fancies may be LONG SPAN, VAALSO, JAYOLA. • SCRATCHINGS POSTED DU MAURIER WITHDRAWN Scratchings posted yesterday for tho first day of the Avondale Jockey Club s Spring Meeting to-day were as follows: — . , Maiden Plate. —Silver Glow, Tupeotu.
