Road Improvements

WORKS NEAR AUCKLAND The rough nature of the reconstruction works on the Helensville highway, immediately south of Brigham's Creek Bridge, has been the subject of much unfavourable comment recently. Numerous complaints have been lodged with the Automobile Association (Auckland). An inspection this week revealed very unpleasant condition's where a base course of heavy boulders is being laid. Tho alternative routo via Swanson and Waitakere was found to be in reasonably good order. An improvement on the Great South Koad, between Auckland and Papakura, which will be appreciated by motorists, is the widening of tho running surface by grading back the grass which has encroached very close to the tar-sealed shoulders of the concrete. The extra width will enable cycle or pedestrian traffic to keep further 1o the left, and thus obviate congestion of the stream of motor vehicles. The coastal route from Howick to Clevedon. via Ma'raetai, is not in a very satisfactory condition for pleasure touring, states: a report of the Automobile Association (Auckland). A portion of the foreshore at Ma'raetai has been soon red hv heavy seas, and the road at this point has almost entirely disappeared. J"he shelly nature of the beach permits the passage of ears, except at high tide. Between Maraetai and Dialer's Beach the road is open, but several partially-cleared slips might give trouble in wet weather. Reconstruction works arc proceeding 011 tho winding section connecting Dialer's Beach with Clevedon, and notice boards advise motorists that this route is temporarily open only for local traffic. There is a good deal of roughness tine to new. works, and considerable difficulty might be experienced after rain, if a heavy volume of traffic passed over the new cuttings.
