Historic Glamis Castle

REV. JOHN STIRTON, Senior Minister of Crathio, has prepared an admirable account of Glamis Castle, tlio Queen's former liome, its gardens, its luuinted room, and its parish church, and lias provided it with coloured plates and many other illustrations. Ho describes tlio contents of the castle and some of the interesting episodes in its history and that of its predecessors on tlio site, for in its modern form Glamis Castlo differs very greatly from what it looked liko when it first appeared in history. He describes the dreadful fate of Janet, widow of tlio sixth Lord Glamis, in 1537, and how tho luckless Prince, whom the Jacobites hailed as King James VIII., "touched" for tho King's Evil when ho came to Glamis only two months after its lord, the fifth Earl of Stratlimore, had been killed fighting in his cause at Sheriffinuir in November, 1715. Mr. Stirton reminds his readers that the castlo is the original of "Glenallan Castlo" in "Tho Antiquary," and gives a picture of tho "Lion of Glamis," tho silver drinking-vessel which inspired Sir Walter Scott, who was a guest there in 1793, with tho idea of the Baron of Bradwardine's "Bear" in "Waverlev." "Glamis Castle," by the Reverend John Stirton. (Forfar: W. Shepherd, Castlo Street.)
