THE LABOUR PROGRAMME
TOO FAR AND TOO FAST OPINIONS OF. AUSTRALIANS [j)Y TELEGRAPH —PItKSS ASSOCIATION] WELLINGTON, Friday A former Mayor of Christclnirch, Mr. J. W. Beanland, returned to-day from a nine weeks' visit to Australia with Mrs. Beanland. He said he found the present programme of the Now Zealand Labour Government was viewed with a good deal of scepticism in the Commonwealth, where the opinion was often expressed that Labour in New Zealand was trying to go too far and too fast. Doubts were also expressed as to tlio ability of the Government to finance the social security scheme. Australians considered their own scheme very much more feasible. Mr. Beanland was struck by the change in the Australian attitude toward New Zealand during the past few years. Previously there had been jealousy and some suspicion between the two'' countries, but to-day Australian feeling was most cordial and anv sign of jealousy appeared to have disappeared. He was most hospitably received by the Mayors of the various towns ho visited, and bad been entertained by the Lord Mayor of Melbourne.
