VEHICULAR FERRIES
STORM PROTECTION URGED COMPLAINT ABOUT SMOKING Further representations for the provision of more adequate protection against the weather on vehicular ferries are to be math? to the Devon port Ferry Company, limited, by the Automobile Association (Auckland,), which reached this decision at a meeting Inst night. It was recommended that all ferries should bo equipped with canvas covering to be placed across the bow during crossings on stormy days. The president, Mr. F. G. Farrell, who was appointed to act on behalf of the association, said that previous representations had been unsuccessful. Many cars near the front of the ferries were endangered from flying spray on windy days, and it seemed reasonable that vehicles should be more satisfactorily protected. "There is nothing in the conditions laid down by the Marine Department, ■in conenction with the licensing of ferries, compelling protection against the weather," said Mr. J. H. Kinncar. "Passengers, on the other hand, must be given adequate shelter and protcction." In reply to another member, Mr. Kinncar added that there was a by-law prohibiting smoking ou vehicular ferries. "It is not strictly enforced, said Mr. H. W. Bullock, adding that it was important that smoking on the ferries, which appeared to have become more prevalent recently, should be suppressed.
