BOXING RING

PROGRAMME NEXT MONDAY CLARK AND GILDO AGAIN The Auckland Boxing Association will stage another double bill programme at the Town Hall next Monday night, the star attraction of which will be the return contest between Young Gildo and Snowy Clark. The supporting tight will be an eight-round bout between Don Johnston, of Auckland, and Bob Morrighan, late of Christchurch. That Clark should be given an opportunity of mooting Gildo' again was almost a foregone conclusion after their last sterling battle, when the Filipino received the decision following twelve rounds of fast and clever fighting. Neither Clark nor Gildo has appeared in contests since that meeting and both are reported as fit as weeks of careful conditioning can make tlicm. Morrighan was to have met Johnston previously, but was unfortunately weather bound, and Johnny Dean was substituted, only to lose by a technical knock-out to the Aucklander. This eight-round contest should prove to be a fast and attractive exhibition. Both are showing up well in their work-outs and it would be difficult to foretell the winner.

Vic. Caltaux meets .Jack Davis at Gisborue to-morrow night and the following day he flies to Invercargill to meet Tiger Parks, substituting for Hockey Hcnnell. who returned to Australia on Friday. Then on the tenth of next month the spectacular Aucklander is scheduled to fight again under the auspices of the Southland Association. his opponent probably being Barney Downs. Bob McLachlan. the popular Auckland light-weight, will meet Pat Murphy at Wanganui to-night. Young Gildo is to meet Billy Ait ken at Palinerston North on August 11. It will be remembered that Ait ken gained a points victory over Gildo last season iu Invercargill. and the Filipino has repeatedly expressed the desire to attempt to reverse that close decision. With a view to conditioning themselves for the forthcoming amateur championships the local aspiring champions are busy in the gymnasiums and the lads have had an opportunity of trving themselves out at the various inter-gymnasium tourneys that have been arranged. A verv success! ul series of bouts was staged at Papatoctoe last Thursday, the contestants coming from the Auckland gymnasium and the Papatoctoe boxing ciuh. and the standard was well above the usual. . Indications are that the entries tor the championships will be larger than usual and all interested arc optimistic i that the standard of entertainment will I be even higher than in previous years.
