HOSPITAL FINANCE

CHANGED SYSTEM URGED PRIME MINISTER'S COMMENT "It will, I feel sure, be readily recognised that the alteration suggested by the council iji the method of financing hospital boards is a radical one," states a letter received from the Prime Minister, Mr. Savage, at a meeting of the Waitemata Coun'tv Council yesterday. The council had suggested that the cost of the maintenance of hospitals should bo borno by the Consolidated Fund. "The suggestion to transfer the whole financial responsibility to general taxation has to be considered in relation to administrative responsibility, which, of course, under the present law, is very largely a local responsibility," the letter continues. "1 shall, however, be glad to see that your council's representations are borne in mind when consideration is given to tho important question of hospital board finance." Failing all other measures, the council decided to advocate that outdoor relief expenditure should be a charge on the Consolidated Fund, and that building loans should be longterm and not short-dated. This would relieve the taxpayer of a higher contribution occasioned, by a heavy sinking fund.
